Abu Serga church is considered the oldest Coptic Church in Cairo, dating back to the 4th century, and it was probably finished during the 5th century. This church was built over the site, where the Holy Family stayed during their escape from King Herod to Egypt. Abu Serga Church has a significant historical importance where several patriarchs of the Coptic Church were elected and the first Patriarch to be elected in this church was Patriarch Isaac.
